Audio setup
MicMatcher measures your capsules through an audio input, so it needs permission to use your microphone. Audio is analysed in this browser and never uploaded.

Test type
Measure frequency response with a logarithmic sine sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Calibrated results are shown in dB SPL.
Compare capsule sensitivity at 1 kHz using the same pistonphone reference.
Match with a pistonphone
Measure each capsule, then use "Use as reference" on any row to compare the others against it.

About MicMatcher
MicMatcher is a tool for measuring electret microphone capsules and choosing stereo pairs for field recording. You can compare frequency response and sensitivity, whether you build microphones as a hobby or for work.
Measure your capsules
Connect an audio input and measure each capsule with a logarithmic sine sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. MicMatcher uses FFT analysis and smoothing to plot the response. The live spectrum and level meter help you check the signal, with warnings when it clips.
You can also compare sensitivity at 1 kHz with a pistonphone. Keep the source, microphone position, and input gain consistent between measurements.
Choose a pair
Save each measurement under a microphone ID, then open Match pairs. MicMatcher compares response curves and sensitivity. Adjust the weights to choose how much each contributes to the match score, then inspect the suggested pairs and their differences.
Your measurements stay here
Audio analysis and matching run in your browser. MicMatcher processes the live input without saving or uploading audio recordings. Measurements are saved on this device in the browser's IndexedDB storage.
Export your database as JSON to back it up, share it, or import it on another device. Clearing this site's browser data also removes its saved measurements.
Once the app is loaded and cached, you can use it offline.
Browsers and equipment
MicMatcher works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with layouts for desktop, tablet, and phone. It needs a browser with Web Audio API support: Chrome or Edge 89+, Firefox 85+, or Safari 14.1+. Chrome or Edge on a desktop is recommended.
For measurements, use a calibrated audio interface and start with a reference microphone before switching to the capsules you want to compare.
Technical details
Audio input and playback use the Web Audio API. Signal processing uses a custom JavaScript FFT implementation. Chart.js draws the response curves, Canvas draws the live display, and IndexedDB stores measurements locally.
